7 Signs You Need a New Boiler
2 October 2026 · 5 min read
Most gas boilers last between 10 and 15 years. As they age, small faults become more frequent and efficiency drops. These are the signs our engineers see most often in homes around Glasgow.
1. It is over 10–15 years old
Older non-condensing boilers can waste a large share of the gas they burn. A modern A-rated condensing boiler is far more efficient, so replacing an old unit often lowers your heating bills.
2. Repairs are becoming regular
If you are calling an engineer every winter, the cost of repairs can soon approach the price of a new boiler. Parts for older models can also become hard to find.
3. Rising energy bills
If your usage has not changed but your bills keep climbing, your boiler may be losing efficiency.
4. Yellow or orange flame
A gas flame should burn blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide. Turn the boiler off and call a Gas Safe registered engineer straight away.
5. Strange noises
Banging, gurgling or kettling sounds often point to limescale or sludge build-up in the heat exchanger.
6. Radiators slow to heat up
Cold spots and slow heating can be caused by sludge, a failing pump or a boiler that is too small for your home.
7. Frequent pressure loss
Needing to top up the pressure regularly can mean a leak in the system or a failing component.
What to do next
If you recognise two or more of these signs, it is worth comparing the cost of repair with a replacement. You can get a fixed price for a new boiler online in about a minute.
